From Kethy // "Beauty Contest" reminds us of our youth, a time when beauty perceptions had no standards. It takes us back to when freedom of expression wasn’t just a choice but what came naturally. We live in a parallel universe that tells us natural beauty IS beauty, however, retouched and unnatural beauty IS beauty also. This affects our mental health, creativity and confidence in self-representation.
The bubbles, candies and flowers represent innocence and youthfulness while the fabric, heart shapes around acne and quote, “Life is not a beauty contest” define confidence. Every small detail is an ode to self-confidence no matter the colour of your skin or the amount of body hair. This is what freedom should look like, this is what beauty is because “life is not a beauty contest”.
